A relieved and excited Mittu Chandilya, CEO, AirAsia tells CNBC-TV18 that after finally getting DGCA nod, he can't wait to start operations in India . In an interview to CNBC-TV18's Ronojoy Banerjee he said that company is working on being the lowest cost airline at great quality. Further, he adds that Air Asia is prepared to begin operations in June.
Below is the verbatim transcript of the interview.
Ronojoy: It has been an excruciating many months of wait for you. Finally the Air Operators Permit (AOP) has come; your first reaction to CNBC-TV18.
A: I am really excited. When we started off on this journey, we started off to work to revolutionise air travel in India. We have never given up on that and it has been seven-and-half months where we have gone through this AOP process. It is still one of the fastest AOP processes that we have ever been experienced in Indian aviation.
I can't thank DGCA and Ministry of Civil Aviation enough. They have all been very supportive. We are very excited. I didn't do this alone and the team has been there, they have been chugging on; moments when we have not know what the process was, we have gone and learnt what the process is and I can't thank them enough.
Ronojoy: When do we expect AirAsia India to start operations then?
A: We are prepared to start operations in June. However, I haven't decided when that launch date would be.
Q: We are seeing the aviation sector made to go through this massive downturn and also cumulative losses mounting. Over there you are going to come in and you have promised the world to the consumers. How do you keep up? You do realize the expectations that are there of your consumers. How will you live up to that?
A: I don't plan to disappoint the Indian people. I have never disappointed any stake holder that we have signed up and given commitments to. We are working on being the lowest cost airline and I have to clarify something, it is lowest cost at great quality, reliability and safety. It is not lowest cost while compromising on any one of those situations.
