Ajit Singh bats for Jet-Etihad deal; Jet's Goyal meets FM

As the controversy regarding the Jet-Etihad deal deepens, aviation minister Ajit Singh, once again came in support of the deal on Wednesday. Commenting on the concerns raised by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Ajit Singh said that given today's charged political environment, there was nothing wrong if the PMO sought clarifications, reports CNBC-TV18's Sumit Jha, quoting sources.

"In the current political environment if any MP writes, obviously the Prime Minister wants to make sure that they don't have any concerns. So there is nothing wrong if he says, 'Okay, ask the ministries to take care of their concerns'," Singh added.

"In the inter-ministerial group (IMG) meeting Jet said that it will be flying from 38 cities overseas. Though Qatar, Emirates, and Lufthansa airlines have not given us  the gauge facility, we have given them a lot of seats. This facility will allow Indians to fly to many parts of the world where Air India does not go."

"It is not just a bilateral agreement between two small countries and that is why the commerce minister, external affairs minister and finance minister are all involved, because there are bigger issues at stake," he told CNBC-TV18.

Amidst the controversy, Jet Airways chief Naresh Goyal met the finance minister on Wednesday less than 24 hours after the PMO issued clarification on Jet-Etihad deal. And refused to answer media queries when he came out. If sources are to be believed he will soon be calling on different other ministers involved in this deal including civil aviation minister Ajit Singh.

The PMO issued a clarification on Tuesday and resolved some of the issues but concerns regarding the deal remain. The primary concern remains the submission of bilateral rights that were negotiated between India and United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the Cabinet.

PMO has said in its clarification that the Cabinet note will be kept in an abeyance till all the allegations against the bilateral air-traffic rights between India and UAE are put to rest.

So, the next few days will be very crucial for the deal when all the ministries and other agencies look at every aspect of these bilateral rights which are very important part of the entire Jet-Etihad deal.
