BJP's stand is now exposed: Deepender Singh Hooda

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government won the vote on foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail in the Lok Sabha today. While there were 218 votes against the FDI, there were 253 votes in the favour of the government's move.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, Deepender Singh Hooda, MP, Congress says the BJP's stand is exposed because there is no policy against the domestic multi-brand retail.

Below is the edited transcript of his interview on CNBC-TV18.

Q: Did you ever shop at Wal-Mart?

A: I did ofcourse. When I was in US, I have shopped at Wal-Mart, X-Mart and Y-Mart. The BJP stands exposed because there is no policy against the domestic multi-brand retail. Infact Purti Group is one of the fastest growing multi-brand retail, as far as domestic investment is concerned. Why they are against FDI in multi-brand retail because they are in favour of FDI also. So, they are in favour of FDI and they are also in favour of multi-brand retail. But when it comes to FDI in multi-brand retail, they seem to suddenly discover that they are not for it. So, I think BJP's stand is exposed.

Q: One of the views that we have been getting through the internet medium is that the BJP, as far as this debate is concerned, was not speaking the language of the young and aspirational India, while the Congress and people like you seem to capture that more. Would you agree with that categorisation?

A: I agree with it. I think the nation needs to move forward. There is no question of keeping your individual political interest above the nation. I think the nation needs to move forward at a fast pace. The Congress has been trying to bring in reforms. They were a lot of issues, as far as our coalition partners are concerned, in the past. But the last two-three months Congress, the UPA has taken a lot of decisions trying to put our economy back in the rails. I think it is time that, on some of these matters, we rise above the political lines and keep the nation and the nations economy first.
