The overall automobile industry in India may be hit by a sharp slowdown, but super luxury car maker Rolls-Royce doesn't see any speed bumps, at least for now.
It drove in the new four-seater coupe Wraith in Mumbai on Friday at a price of Rs 4.6 crore. The car is powered by a V12 engine, coupled with 8-speed automatic transmission, generating 624 brake horse power.
The Wraith is the seventh model in Rolls Royce's range and deliveries will begin by the end of 2013.
Rolls-Royce is also expanding its dealer network in the country. It will open new showrooms in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh in September taking its total dealer network to 5. It may also further look at adding couple of showrooms next year, Herfried Hasenoehrl, GM for Emerging Markets - Asia, told reporters.
The company re-entered the Indian market in 2005 and has since sold over 250 cars here. Rolls Royce globally sold 3,575 units last year.
Company officials didn't reveal the number of vehicles they have sold in India so far this year or the target for the year ahead, but he says they have received a "extremely positive feedback" on the new products and enquiries have been more than expected.
"We have seen some challenges but more successes in India. We have made a long term commitment. We are cautiously optmistic of the year," Hasenoehrl said, adding India remains among the most important markets for the company in South Asia and South East Asia.
Rolls-Royce's customers are in a different market segment, so there is no pressure on demand, said Sharad Kachalia, Director, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Mumbai.
He says, most of the company's customers are Ultra HNIs (high net worth individuals) and usually prospective customers are tapped by what he called whisper marketing.
The Ghost has been Rolls-Royce's best selling car in India, Kachalia added.
