Great Eastern Hotel to reopen in 2013

The iconic 171-year-old Great Eastern Hotel here will again welcome guests from sometime next year, its new management said today.

The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, which took over the country's first luxury hotel in 2005, this evening performed puja and said the hotel would be opened in 2013 under new branding LaLiT Great Eastern, its Chairperson & Managing Director Jyotsna Suri said in a statement.

At present, the hotel is under extensive restoration process with Rs 260 crore investment in the property. The group bought the hotel's 90 per cent stake at Rs 52 crore from the West Bengal government in 2005.

The hotel proposes to offer 244 rooms and suites, an all-day dining, two specialty restaurants including the famous Maxim's, the grand bakery. The Great Eastern Hotel, commissioned in 1840, is said to be India's (then British India) first star hotel, according to Lalit Suri Hospitality Group website. Called the 'Jewel of the East', the hotel was very popular.
